Hey plant peeps! Thanks for tuning in to another Plant Journey with us! This time, we are featuring the fantastic @SammyNicks. It is wonderful to hear how Sammy was influenced by her travels to commit to a plant-based diet, she has some fantastic advice if you are just starting out on your plant journey!
1. When did you start your plant-based journey and why?
My name is Samantha but most people call me Sammy! I am a fashion designer turned chef. I studied fashion in Cape Town before moving to London to pursue a career in the fashion industry. While I valued my experience in the fashion industry I decided to change careers, from fashion to food.
For about 7 years I have flipped between being vegan, vegetarian and even eating meat on the odd occasion. A five years ago I travelled to Sri Lanka on holiday and met some wonderful people who inspired me to get back on track with a whole foods plant based diet and I haven\'t looked back. Since then I have been exploring ways to improve to my lifestyle within my means and have been documenting this journey on Instagram @sammynicks .
2. Is there a certain food you miss and what do you have as a plant-based alternative?
I don’t really miss anything, there is just so many options available now for vegans that you can enjoy all your childhood favourites! My favourite meal was my grannies lasagna and the meatless farm have a delicious recipe for vegan lasagna that hits the spot!
(Find that recipe here on their US site.)
3. What’s your go-to easy dinner?
Marinated tofu with veggies.
4. Who is your favourite/most inspiring plant-based account to follow?
Elsas Wholesome Life, I love how informative and inspiring all her posts are!
5. Where do you see the future of Plant-Based eating?
I only see it growing more and more to the point where meat eaters will be eating lab grown meat and so many plants! It’s definitely here to stay.
6. Which EAT.PLNT meal would you like to try the most?
7. Do you have any advice you would like to give to those just starting a plant-based diet?
Start slow, try replacing one animal product such a milk. Try lots of different plant-based mills until you find one you love and stick with that and then continue with other animal products. Try incorporating more fruit and veg into your diet. Make sure half your plate is filled with veggies. Read, learn and educate! Understand why you are wanting to move to plant based diet. Is it for the animals? Your health? The planet? Watch documentaries, read books about veganism, follow fun and inspiring vegan accounts! This should be fun and enjoyable not something you hate otherwise what’s the point.
