Rhys's Plant Journey


Our next plant journey story is from Rhys who is 23 and from Greenwich in London! Rhys is passionate about veganism and even wrote his Master's thesis on the ethics of veganism! On Instagram Rhys goes by: @tofiend


1. When did you start your plant-based journey and why?

I became a vegan 5 years ago in the May of 2015. I’m an ethical vegan and I care deeply about animal rights. I became vegan instantly after watching about 6 minutes of the documentary Earthlings (which is footage from inside a slaughterhouse). I couldn’t bear to watch and was really upset, so I vowed to never eat animal products again, and I never knowingly have done! I wrote my Master’s thesis on the ethics of veganism and feel that veganism is a moral imperative for anyone who claims to love animals. You can’t love them and then eat them! Environmental reasons also play a part, and it’s great that veganism is healthy, but it’s my love for animals and a desire to prevent their suffering that drives me personally!


2. Is there a certain food you miss and what do you have as a plant-based alternative?


I wish there was a good vegan fish alternative! I haven’t found anything that recreates it properly yet! I love viva vivera products so I have high hopes for something from them. Their vegan schwarma kebab is delicious!


3. What’s your go-to easy dinner?

Tofu Pad Thai


4. Who is your favourite/most inspiring plant-based account to follow?


@_fuxkingfalafel_ makes insane food! Everything she eats looks incredible. She was one of the first accounts I followed when I started my vegan insta, and her meals are so inspiring.


5. Where do you see the future of Plant-Based eating?


I see the future being in veganism continuing to permeate people’s eating. It’s the fastest growing food ‘trend’, and I think in the future there’ll be more availability and accessibility of vegan food and vegan alternatives. Vegan cuisine or options in high end and Michelin starred restaurants must also be coming down the track at some point...

7. Do you have any advice you would like to give to those just starting a plant-based diet?


Try it! Just start and see how easy it is. There are so many resources online. Make sure you eat vegetables, but don’t exclusively eat green meals, eat how you normally would but without the cruelty. There are vegan steaks, sausages, bacon, egg, kebabs etc so you can be the biggest meat lover and just change to a vegan alternative. You don’t have to live a super healthy life to be a vegan! Also watch documentaries. Educate yourself so you have the impetus behind you to want to keep making that change. When you’re driven by your convictions, it makes it a lot easier to keep on track!
