Alicia's Plant Journey

Our next plant journey story is from Alicia aka @hellyeahitsvegan_ on Instagram! Alicia is 21 and from Essex, but she is currently a student in Sheffield!

1. When did you start your plant-based journey and why?

I have been Vegan for one year as of Veganuary 2020! Before that, I was veggie for a few months and before that I had been leaning towards the idea since the moment I moved to my own place when I was 18. I have so many different reasons for going vegan but it all started from watching cowspiracy I think! From there I started following as many vegan bloggers on Instagram and Facebook as possible to try to motivate myself to make the change. I went on to watch show such as What the Health which was the kick I finally needed as I couldn’t look at the food I used to eat in the same way again! On top of this there was the growing reports on climate change and animal agriculture’s effects and so I knew I had to just jump into it and challenge myself. It ended up being less of a challenge and more like, learning to cook more exciting things and discovering food I've never heard of and having way more energy!

2. Is there a certain food you miss and what do you have as a plant-based alternative?

This varies but I’d say either chocolate or creamy pasta sauce (like really really creamy). My favourite chocolate bars that are vegan are the Nomo bars and I always keep one around ready! For the pasta I’ve only recently discovered my own recipe through trial and error to replicate what I was looking for! I make a roux with vegan butter and flour, add in soya milk until its a creamy consistency and then I add in some Alpro plain yoghurt, I think it’s the yoghurt that makes the difference!

3. What’s your go-to easy dinner?

I love making amazing hearty stews with beans and veggies and dumplings.

4. Who is your favourite/most inspiring plant-based account to follow?

There are two main accounts that I follow that helped me with veganism and to learn that it isn’t all Buddha bowls! (Not that theres anything wrong with a Buddha bowl! But in the north of England it’s cold!!) They are @uglyvegan which shows the beige and wonderful and potatoey side of Veganism and @raelikesfroot who tests out supermarket vegan items like vegan cheese and all new ranges that come out and she gives her honest opinion! Rae is especially helpful because she does budget vegan aldi and other low cost supermarket hauls which is super useful as a student!

5. Where do you see the future of Plant-Based eating?

Even in the past year I’ve seen so many people around me switch to plant based or are on their way there and it’s so exciting to see! I'd like to think that in a year or so it would be completely normal to eat plant based and there would be less stigma and misinformation! We aren’t just malnourished picky eaters!! I’d like to see plant based foods becoming common place in super markets and hopefully not having such a high price for alternatives too.

7. Do you have any advice you would like to give to those just starting a plant-based diet?

To help yourself with cravings always have an alternative on hand! On top of this definitely unfollow any accounts that are showing off meat or dairy products as your brain will see this and crave! Follow hashtags on Instagram such as #vegan and change your discover page algorithm by following lots of vegan accounts then, when you have a craving you can open up your discover and see how many amazing ways the craving can be satisfied using vegan food! Also B12!!! Remember your B12 because when I first swapped from veggie to vegan I didn’t and you will feel SO much better for remembering to take it. It’s crucial!
